UK Monitors Bangladesh Crisis Amid Speculation Over Hasina's Asylum
The UK is in close contact with India to respond to the events in Bangladesh, following a violent protest that ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Speculations are rife about her asylum status. Jaishankar indicated Hasina may be in Delhi, while UK options seem limited due to asylum laws.
The UK remains in contact with India to monitor and respond to the crisis in Bangladesh, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) confirmed following a call between the countries' foreign ministers.
The call took place after India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy discussed recent developments in Bangladesh and West Asia.
While FCDO did not elaborate on deposed Bangladeshi leader Sheikh Hasina’s potential travel plans to London, a spokesperson emphasized the UK's continued cooperation with regional partners to address the crisis.
