Thailand's PM Dismissed: Political Turmoil Amid Ethical Scandal

Thailand's Constitutional Court on Wednesday dismissed Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, ruling he "grossly" violated ethics by appointing a former convict as minister. This raises the likelihood of political instability within the governing alliance. Real estate tycoon Srettha is the fourth premier in 16 years to be dismissed by the same court, underlining the significant role Thailand's judiciary plays in its ongoing political crisis.

Srettha's departure after less than a year in office necessitates parliament choosing a new premier on Friday, further fuelling uncertainty in a country plagued by coups and court rulings against multiple governments and political parties. His Pheu Thai Party moved swiftly to solidify its alliance, announcing an early Thursday meeting to select a candidate for prime minister ahead of Friday's parliamentary session.

The Pheu Thai Party and its predecessors have frequently faced turmoil, with two governments overthrown by coups, largely due to a protracted rivalry between the party's founders, the Shinawatra family, and influential conservative and royalist factions. Judges ruled 5-4 to dismiss Srettha, citing a lack of integrity. The ruling follows the recent dissolution of the opposition Move Forward Party, adding to the current economic challenges.
