The BJP on Tuesday condemned the Mamata Banerjee government following the Supreme Court's sharp observations in the rape and murder case of a medic in Kolkata, questioning the “mindset and morality” of the West Bengal administration.
The party assured that the Centre will act decisively to guarantee justice for the victim.
BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi linked the Constitution’s perceived threat to West Bengal and other opposition-ruled states, criticizing the Mamata-led government for allegedly suppressing justice seekers and protecting criminals.
Trivedi highlighted that Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal defended the West Bengal government, thus underscoring the support among INDIA bloc allies. The Supreme Court's suo motu cognisance of the case has raised broader concerns about the safety of doctors across India.
“The Supreme Court's questions underline serious concerns about those governing West Bengal,” a BJP spokesperson noted at a press briefing, pointing out the TMC’s alleged efforts to cover up the crime.
The BJP targeted INDI alliance partners, accusing them of mutually safeguarding each other's crimes and posing a threat to the Constitution and citizens' safety.
Amidst police actions against BJP leaders in West Bengal criticizing the case, the party claims the TMC government is penalizing those demanding justice for the victim rather than punishing the perpetrators.
“Shantanu Sen was removed as TMC spokesperson, and TMC MP Sukhendu Sekhar Roy was summoned by Kolkata Police for raising questions, indicating internal dissent suppression,” a BJP spokesperson mentioned.
Trivedi warned of the grim scenario if TMC held central power, reiterating that the central government will ensure justice as directed by the court.
BJP's Shehzad Poonawalla called for Mamata Banerjee's resignation, citing her moral unfitness to continue as Chief Minister following the Supreme Court's observations.
