On Friday, intense protests by BJP activists swept across West Bengal, in response to the rape and murder of a woman trainee doctor at a state-run hospital in Kolkata. The activists gheraoed several police stations, raising slogans and blocking entrances for hours.
In Purba Medinipur district, over 500 BJP workers stormed Nandigram police station, breaking through barricades and clashing with state police and Rapid Action Force personnel. They demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, alleging her failure to ensure the safety of women health workers. The protestors eventually exited the premises, allowing authorities to lock the gates temporarily.
BJP supporters launched similar agitations in Chinsurah, Siuri, New Jalpaiguri, Bankura, Midnapore, and Barabani, among other places, chanting slogans like, "We have one point demand, the CM should resign." Despite security forces' efforts, tensions escalated in various districts. Senior BJP leader Dilip Ghosh emphasized the government's loss of right to office amid these widespread, non-violent protests.
