BJP President J P Nadda on Tuesday criticized the Kolkata police for their alleged excessive use of force against protestors agitating over the rape-murder of a trainee doctor. He claimed that in West Bengal, under Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's leadership, aiding rapists and criminals is prioritized over women's safety.
Nadda's comments followed an incident where police resorted to lathi-charge, water cannons, and tear gas to disperse protestors in Kolkata. The demonstrators were reportedly throwing stones and bricks at the police and attempting to breach barricades blocking their march to the state secretariat.
'The images of police highhandedness from Kolkata have angered every person who values democratic principles,' Nadda said on X. 'In Didi's West Bengal, to help rapists and criminals is valued but it's a crime to speak for women's safety.'
