In a significant political shift, three Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillors defected to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of a crucial election for the MCD's Standing Committee. The switch comes just a day before members will elect one representative to fill the committee's lone vacancy.
AAP councillors Preeti, Sarita Phogat, and Praveen Kumar joined the BJP in the presence of state president Virendra Sachdeva and MCD Leader of Opposition Raja Iqbal Singh. The trio cited dissatisfaction with the AAP's internal working environment and governance issues as primary reasons for their departure.
The election for the Standing Committee's 18-member panel, the top decision-making body of the MCD, is scheduled for Thursday. The vacancy arose following the resignation of BJP councillor Kamaljeet Sehrawat after her election to the West Delhi Lok Sabha seat earlier this year.
