U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent visited Ukraine this week, aiming to strengthen ties between the United States and the Ukrainian people. In an interview with Fox News, Bessent detailed his brief trip to Kyiv as part of President Donald Trump's initiative to end the war in Ukraine and secure American interests in its post-war landscape.
Bessent, who is also a former hedge fund manager, emphasized accountability and partnership during his visit, stating, 'We want to be partners on the other side, and Americans will share in the value created post-conflict.' His visit marks the first by a cabinet secretary and highlights the strategic importance placed on Ukraine by the Trump administration.
The discussions in Kyiv included potential involvement of the U.S. in Ukraine's strategic minerals and energy sectors. Although specifics were not disclosed, Bessent mentioned that a minerals deal would serve as a 'security shield' for Ukraine post-war. Trump's vision includes a swift resolution to the ongoing conflict, with an eye on financial stakes such as $500 billion worth of rare earth minerals, conditional upon continued U.S. support to Kyiv.
