Controversy surrounds Justice Varma after allegations surfaced regarding the discovery of cash at his residence. A fire incident at his home reportedly led to the money's recovery by firefighters on March 14. Justice Varma was absent at that time.

Chief Justice of India, Sanjiv Khanna, has set up a committee of High Court judges to investigate these claims. Until the inquiry concludes, the Chief Justice of Delhi High Court has been instructed not to allocate any cases to Justice Varma.
