In a striking revelation, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has alleged that more than 5,000 social media accounts have been activated from Islamic nations such as Bangladesh and Pakistan to favor a particular Congress leader in Assam.
This development, coming in the lead-up to the 2026 assembly elections, raises questions of foreign interference in Indian politics, sparking a national security concern.
Sarma indicated that these accounts have largely ignored other Congress leaders and have been monitored for their potential connections to extremist groups.
