In a fervent address at Kolkata's Martyrs' Day rally, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee set the stage for the 2026 state elections by decrying what she labels as 'linguistic terror' against Bengalis by the BJP. The TMC leader vowed to protect the Bengali language and identity from perceived threats.
Banerjee alleged a conspiracy between the BJP and the Election Commission to manipulate the voter list, describing it as a 'silent purge' of legitimate voters. She urged party members to resist this and announced a new 'Language Movement' to uphold Bengali identity starting July 27.
In response, BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari countered with a call for electoral list revisions to eliminate illegal voters, while also promising protection for persecuted Hindu migrants from Bangladesh. The rallies underscore the sharp political divide as both parties prepare for the upcoming polls.
