U.S. President Donald Trump has reiterated his support for Morocco's sovereignty over the Western Sahara, advocating a Moroccan autonomy proposal as the exclusive resolution to the protracted conflict in the region, according to reports from the state news agency MAP on Saturday.
The conflict, which has remained unresolved for decades, involves Morocco and the Algeria-supported Polisario Front, which seeks independence for Western Sahara. Trump's acknowledgment of Moroccan claims took place during the end of his first presidential term as part of an agreement in which Morocco normalized relations with Israel.
In alignment with the Abraham Accords, the U.S. continues to support Morocco's autonomy proposal, aiming to foster regional stability through diplomatic efforts, combating terrorism, and boosting economic cooperation. As of June, Britain joined the U.S. and France in endorsing Morocco's plan for the region, further isolating Algeria's referendum demand.
