The Congress party marked the 100th anniversary of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) with a series of critical statements, citing historical excerpts to argue against the organization's legacy. Key among their claims is Mahatma Gandhi's observation of the RSS as a 'communal body with a totalitarian outlook.'

Further strengthening their position, the Congress drew attention to a 1948 speech at a Congress session in Jaipur by India's first home minister, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, who criticized the RSS and emphasized the need for a secular state. The speech highlighted the atmosphere that led to Gandhi's assassination, which was allegedly influenced by RSS activities.

This renewed scrutiny comes as Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded the RSS for its nation-building contributions, even unveiling a commemorative coin and stamp in its honor. Congress leaders argue this move dishonors India's freedom struggle and question the government's decision to celebrate a historically controversial organization.
