In a significant political shift, Jagdeep Singh Cheema, previously associated with the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday in the presence of Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini.
Cheema, who unsuccessfully ran for assembly elections from Amloh in 2012 and Fatehgarh Sahib in 2022, was welcomed into the BJP by its Punjab working president Ashwani Sharma and Union minister Ravneet Singh Bittu. The event highlighted the BJP's commitment to Punjab's development, as Sharma criticized the AAP government for not fulfilling its promises to the state.
Sharma specifically accused the AAP of failing to deliver a Rs 1,000 monthly payment to women in Punjab, contrasting it with Haryana's Lado Lakshmi Yojana, which provides Rs 2,100 to eligible women. He also noted Haryana's initiative to offer minimum support price to farmers, setting a precedent the BJP claims the AAP has not matched.
