Tensions Escalate: Thailand-Cambodia Border Conflict Continues Amid Ceasefire Claims
Despite attempts to broker a ceasefire, tensions remain high at the Thailand-Cambodia border, with both nations exchanging heavy weapons fire. Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul emphasizes continued military actions, while diplomatic talks seek resolution. The situation affects thousands of civilians, with ASEAN and the U.S. involved.
Tensions are escalating at the Thailand-Cambodia border as military exchanges persist. Despite claims of a ceasefire brokered by U.S. President Donald Trump, Thailand's leadership, headed by Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, remains resolute, adamant on continuing military operations until threats are mitigated.
The conflict, which has triggered extensive displacements, prompts regional concern. ASEAN, with Malaysia leading mediation efforts, proposes a ceasefire starting Saturday evening, urging restraint and halting military advancements. In tandem, the U.S. pledges satellite monitoring to assist in oversight.
The fighting marks one of the most severe exchanges since a similar clash in July. Thailand suspended September's ceasefire following accusations against Cambodia of freshly planted landmines, a claim Cambodia rebuffs. Meanwhile, civilians impacted by the fighting face significant displacement challenges and uncertainty.
