Tensions are soaring in Maharashtra as Social Justice Minister Sanjay Shirsat calls for a freeze on the All India Majlis E Ittehadul Muslimeen's 'Kite' symbol. The civic elections are set for January 15, closely following Makar Sankranti, the renowned kite festival, on January 14. Imtiaz Jaleel of AIMIM derided Shirsat's proposal, describing it as 'laughable.'
Shirsat expressed intentions to approach the Election Commission, fearing that kite flying during Makar Sankranti could double as campaign propaganda, thus swaying voters. Shirsat, affiliated with Shiv Sena under Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, emphasized the importance of curbing any electoral manipulation.
AIMIM leader Jaleel countered with irony and a call for broader introspection regarding election symbols, suggesting that if Shirsat persists, he might as well fly kites in the spirit of unity. He further jested that NCP leaders should refrain from wearing watches, referencing their 'Clock' symbol. Jaleel questioned the logic of banning the BJP's 'Lotus' from blooming.
