Former cricket star and Telangana minister Mohammad Azharuddin voiced optimism for Congress's prospects in the upcoming Mumbai civic polls scheduled for January 15. Speaking at a campaign event, Azharuddin highlighted a favorable atmosphere for the party's resurgence.
Leading a roadshow in south Mumbai's Mumbadevi area alongside Rajya Sabha member Imran Pratapgarhi, Azharuddin denounced divisive politics. 'Issues like communal divides and the Hijab debate should not disrupt democracy,' he remarked. Pratapgarhi criticized BJP's tactics, labeling their contest with AIMIM as a 'sham fight.'
Congress, contesting 143 of 227 seats in the BMC elections, partners with Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi and others. The party aims to reclaim ground lost in 2017 when it secured only 31 seats. Voting occurs on January 15 with results expected the next day.
