Death of Saif al-Islam Gaddafi Shocks Libya
Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, the prominent son of Libya's former leader Muammar Gaddafi, has died. Reports confirmed his death with details still unclear. Known for shaping Libyan policy before 2011 and facing legal challenges, including a death sentence and ICC charges, his recent political ambitions were thwarted.
Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, the prominent son of late Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi, has reportedly died, according to sources close to the family and Libyan media. His lawyer, Khaled el-Zaydi, also confirmed the news on Tuesday, although details of the circumstances remain scant.
Once a key figure in shaping Libya's policy before the 2011 revolution that ended his father's rule, Saif al-Islam saw his public role diminish in recent years. In 2015, he was sentenced to death in absentia by a Libyan court for allegedly suppressing peaceful protests during the revolution.
The International Criminal Court had also provisionally charged him with crimes against humanity, a case his legal team did not succeed in dismissing. His attempt to重新enter politics as a presidential candidate in 2021 was unsuccessful due to Libya's ongoing political turmoil.
