Sunil Sharma, BJP MLA and Leader of Opposition, voiced strong objections in the Assembly on Tuesday against referring to the Rajouri and Poonch districts as part of the Pir Panjal region. He argued that Jammu and Kashmir has no such distinct region and that it is a historical and cultural unity.
The Assembly witnessed turmoil as Sharma's remarks led to protests among members from Rajouri and Poonch, compelling Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather to adjourn the House amidst heated exchanges between BJP and ruling alliance members. Sharma criticized promotions of separate regional identities, claiming they threaten the province's unity.
Responding to calls for an apology, Sharma maintained that Jammu and Kashmir was singularly formed by Maharaja Hari Singh, pointing to 'Chandrabhaga division' in historical references. Accusing parties of pursuing political interests, he stressed the state's undivided stance and highlighted the government's role in maintaining proper House decorum.
