In a bold move, Congress MP Jairam Ramesh reiterated that the opposition remains steadfast in its efforts to remove Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, who stands accused of displaying partiality toward the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Ramesh portrayed the recent Assembly elections as a battle against the Election Commission of India (ECI), rather than traditional political rivalries.
Highlighting the significance of voting rights, Ramesh declared, "We were not even fighting against political parties; we were fighting against ECI. The ECI has never been as biased as it is now. We will continue to push for the removal of Gyanesh Kumar until he steps down. It is high time the right to vote becomes enshrined as a fundamental right."
As voting wraps up in states including Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and Puducherry, all eyes now turn to May 4 for the much-anticipated vote counting. Previously, Ramesh announced that seventy-three opposition Rajya Sabha MPs lodged a fresh notice with the Rajya Sabha secretariat, calling for the ouster of CEC Kumar. Despite these efforts, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla dismissed the impeachment motion on April 6.
