Vote counting for the Assam assembly election commenced at 8 a.m. today, with the Congress party vigilantly monitoring proceedings for any security breaches or emerging issues. Assam Congress President Gaurav Gogoi assured that multiple party observers across the state are coordinating with the AICC team, ready to flag concerns to the Election Commission of India (ECI).
"We hope for a positive outcome," declared Gogoi, expressing confidence while acknowledging the early trends that favor the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party-led NDA alliance. He emphasized constant vigilance and feedback collection from party workers stationed at various counting centers to detect and report any administrative shortfalls promptly.
The Congress has dispatched observers throughout the state to safeguard against malpractice, having established a comprehensive network of operatives in each district. Gogoi highlighted the party's prior vigilance concerning the handling of electronic voting machines (EVMs), underscoring past incidents of unsecured storage.
Gaurav Gogoi, a sitting Lok Sabha MP, is making his inaugural bid for the Assam assembly, contesting from the Jorhat constituency against four-term BJP MLA Hitendra Nath Goswami. Early trends show the BJP-led NDA with a strong lead in 82 constituencies, while the opposition gains traction in 27. These insights emerged following morning tallies.
The previous election cycle in 2016 marked the end of the Congress-led government's 15-year rule, ushering in the BJP under Himanta Biswa Sarma. This election sees the BJP striving for a third term against a six-party Congress alliance. Tight security measures are in place at 52 counting centers, helmed by hundreds of officials, ensuring the vote counting's smooth execution.
