The Costa Rican government received reports of a luxury cruise ship, affected by a hantavirus outbreak, intending to dock on the Canary Islands.
Fernando Clavijo, leader of the regional government, opposed this on public safety grounds, citing insufficient information to guarantee residents' safety. An urgent meeting with Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez is sought to address concerns.
Spanish state broadcaster TVE disclosed that the health ministry's plans included docking at Tenerife, but official comments from the ministry remained elusive, increasing tension and public anxiety.
