The Congress party has called on the Election Commission to delay the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Maharashtra. They propose a month's delay due to the 'Ashadhi Wari' pilgrimage and the forecasted heavy monsoon rains, which they argue could pose challenges to voter participation.
In communication addressed to Chief Electoral Officer S Chockalingam, Harshvardhan Sapkal, Maharashtra Congress president, expressed concerns over devotees participating in the annual pilgrimage to Pandharpur. This journey may see numerous devotees away from their homes during the revision, with the risk of their names being inadvertently removed from voter lists.
The Election Commission initiated the revision on May 14, and a significant portion of the work is already done. However, with lakhs of pilgrims from over 20 districts engaged in the pilgrimage and the potential for severe rains disrupting the procedure, Sapkal advocates for a postponement. He urges the Commission to act, highlighting the need to ensure all eligible voters are accounted for.
