Tensions within the Trinamool Congress (TMC) reached a new high as party stalwart Madan Mitra publicly dismissed assertions from rebel leaders claiming the support of over 20 Members of Parliament. Addressing reporters outside party chairperson Mamata Banerjee's Kolkata residence, Mitra underlined that the party's mandate fundamentally belongs to Banerjee.
Mitra's remarks posed a challenge to the defectors, urging them to contest elections anew if they believe in their popularity, reminding them of the 2.30 crore people who voted for Banerjee. The current internal strife is exacerbated by the claims of expelled MLAs, Ritabrata Banerjee and Sandipan Saha, who allege backing from a significant portion of party legislators.
The meeting at Banerjee's residence, also attended by TMC's national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, is seen as critical amid these tensions. Mitra refrained from revealing details of the discussions, deferring specifics to the party chairperson. The backdrop of these talks includes the resignation of senior leader Firhad Hakim from his mayoral post, marking a significant shift within the party's hierarchy.
