In a groundbreaking discovery, Indian researchers have identified a new species of parasitic isopod, named 'Lobothorax Bharat', in the Bay of Bengal. This novel species was found inhabiting the buccal cavities of marine fish, signifying a major leap in marine biodiversity studies.
The research, a collaborative effort between the Estuarine Biology Regional Centre of the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) and Berhampur University, unveiled 'Lobothorax Bharat' as the fourth known species in the Lobothorax genus. The parasites feed on their host's blood and mucus, often causing anaemia in fish populations.
ZSI Director Dhriti Banerjee described the discovery as crucial for understanding ecological dynamics within the Bay of Bengal. Genetic analyses confirmed its divergence from its closest relative, further showcasing the critical need for ongoing marine research in the region.
