A devastating earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 struck Myanmar on Friday, claiming the lives of over 140 people according to state media. The impact was felt across Southeast Asia, causing buildings to topple, including in Thailand where a collapsed tower has left at least five dead and 117 missing.

The epicentre was just 17 km from the city of Mandalay, Myanmar's historical royal capital and a key Buddhist center. The United States Geological Survey reported the quake's shallow depth at just 10 km, amplifying its destructive power. In Mandalay, widespread damage to infrastructure was reported, and rescue operations are underway.

The disaster's aftermath is compounded by political complexities, as Myanmar's military junta grapples with ongoing insurgencies. Despite these challenges, local charities are actively engaged in rescue missions, though operations remain perilous.
