Yamuna River Nears Danger Level Amidst Heavy Downpour
The Yamuna River in Delhi is nearing the warning level at 204.13 metres due to heavy rainfall in upper catchment areas and increased water release from Hathnikund Barrage. Officials cite ongoing monitoring as water discharge exceeded 50,000 cusecs for the first time this monsoon.

In Delhi, the Yamuna River is approaching dangerous levels as it was recorded at 204.13 metres, merely 0.37 metres below the critical warning threshold, according to officials on Wednesday. The spike in water level is attributed to ongoing rainfall upstream and a significant release of water from Hathnikund Barrage.
For the first time this monsoon, the Hathnikund Barrage in Haryana saw water discharge excesses of 50,000 cusecs, with volumes reaching a peak of 61,000 cusecs early Wednesday morning. A central flood room official reported that close surveillance is being maintained as a primary prevention measure.
By late afternoon, discharge rates had reduced to 40,000 cusecs, though concerns remain as water levels continue to rise towards the warning level in Delhi. The Old Iron Bridge remains a crucial monitoring site to assess flood risks as the water takes about 48 to 50 hours to travel from the barrage to Delhi.
