In a tragic incident, the International Organization for Migration confirmed the deaths of at least 50 Sudanese refugees after a vessel carrying them ignited off the coast of Libya on Sunday.

The IOM, responding swiftly, provided essential medical support to 24 individuals who survived the disaster. Libya, known for its role as a migrant transit hub since the 2011 ousting of Muammar Gaddafi, continues to be a gateway for those fleeing conflict and poverty, hoping to reach Europe through the Mediterranean.

According to IOM statistics, as of February 2025, about 867,055 migrants from 44 different nationalities are residing in Libya, underscoring the complex humanitarian challenges in the region.
