Kolkata's air quality plummeted to 'poor' levels on Tuesday after exuberant Kali Puja celebrations involving the excessive use of firecrackers. Environmentalists allege that fireworks, extending beyond the permitted hours of 8 pm to 10 pm, have escalated pollution levels in various parts of the city.
Data from the West Bengal Pollution Control Board (WBPCB) reveal that the Air Quality Index (AQI) at Victoria Memorial spiked to 253 PM 2.5 on Tuesday afternoon, a significant increase from Monday's levels. Meanwhile, areas like Jadavpur and Ballygunge reported AQIs of 207 and 213, respectively, recording notable degradations.
Authorities are under fire for lax enforcement of regulations, with critics highlighting the adverse impact on newborns and pets. As Diwali approaches, there is growing apprehension that the situation could worsen without stringent measures to control the sale and use of high-decibel firecrackers.
