Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister, M K Stalin, has expressed his dissatisfaction following the central government's rejection of Metro Rail projects in Coimbatore and Madurai. In a communication to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Stalin highlighted the growing discontent among the public due to the decision and requested a reevaluation.
Stalin emphasized that Tamil Nadu is the country's most urbanized state, with high private vehicle ownership, making high-capacity public transport crucial. Despite submitting detailed project reports, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs dismissed the proposals, citing population criteria that Stalin claims were applied inconsistently.
He pointed out that these projects are vital to the industrial and cultural hubs of Tamil Nadu, urging Modi's intervention. Stalin also mentioned the inappropriate comparison of ridership with Chennai and reassured that land acquisition issues had been addressed, advocating for equal treatment among states.
