An injured elephant, found on the Jharkhand-West Bengal border, succumbed to its injuries despite months of dedicated treatment, officials announced Sunday.
The 30-year-old tusker was discovered unconscious in the Nimdih forest area of Jharkhand's Seraikela-Kharsawan district on Saturday evening. The forest officials, with help from local and Gujarat-based veterinarians, had been treating the elephant for its injuries.
After the tusker's death on Sunday morning, a post-mortem suggested septicemia as the cause. The elephant's viscera will be analyzed further at Birsa Agriculture University and the Indian Veterinary Research Institute to confirm the findings.
