In a significant milestone for India's nuclear program, the Kalpakkam nuclear reactor has achieved first criticality, marking a momentous achievement after over two decades of effort. This advancement heralds India into the second stage of its nuclear initiative.

The 500-MW Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR), located in Tamil Nadu, achieved its maiden controlled and sustained chain reaction on April 6. Rajya Sabha Chairman C P Radhakrishnan emphasized the accomplishment as a testament to the hard work of thousands in the Department of Atomic Energy.

This breakthrough strengthens India's commitment to nuclear energy, aiming for 100 gigawatts of power, and aligns with its net-zero emissions target. The move also supports the recent SHANTI Act, expanding the civil nuclear energy sector. The achievement places India among the elite nations mastering this high-skill technology.
