FIFA Probes Allegations of Racism in Argentina's Victory Celebration
FIFA is investigating a video of Argentina's national team singing offensive songs about France's players. The French Football Federation plans to file a complaint over the video, which Argentina's Enzo Fernandez posted on Instagram. FIFA condemns discrimination, and Fernandez has apologized for his actions.
FIFA is examining a video circulating on social media showing members of Argentina's national team engaging in what the French Football Federation (FFF) calls 'racist and discriminatory' behavior towards France's players.
The FFF announced on Monday its intention to file a complaint with FIFA regarding the video, which features Argentina players singing about France striker Kylian Mbappe's African heritage. The video, posted by Argentina forward Enzo Fernandez, was recorded amid celebrations after Argentina's 1-0 win over Colombia to secure the Copa America title.
'FIFA is aware of the video and the incident is being looked into,' a spokesperson said in a statement. 'FIFA strongly condemns any form of discrimination by anyone, including players, fans, and officials.' Fernandez later apologized on social media, expressing regret for getting 'caught up in the euphoria of our celebrations.' He acknowledged that the song included highly offensive language with no excuse for its usage.
However, Argentina's Vice President Victoria Villarruel defended Fernandez and the team, refusing to be intimidated by a 'colonialist' country. 'No colonialist country is going to intimidate us for a song on the pitch or for telling truths they don't want to admit,' she wrote on social media.
In contrast, Chelsea Football Club condemned all forms of discriminatory behavior, reiterating their commitment to being a diverse and inclusive organization. Reports of racial abuse directed at Mbappe and other African-descended players on the France team have surfaced after France's loss to Argentina in the 2022 World Cup final, prompting calls for FIFA to investigate.
