The LGBTQ+ community, along with officials and athletes, has voiced alarm over a surge of vitriolic comments misidentifying female boxer Imane Khelif as transgender during the Paris Olympics, a danger to both LGBTQ+ individuals and female athletes.

Prominent figures like former U.S. President Donald Trump and author J.K. Rowling added to the controversy after Khelif's Italian competitor Angela Carini withdrew from their match, leading to false claims that Khelif was a man fighting a woman. These allegations, fanned by social media, have also embroiled Taiwanese boxer Lin Yu-Ting, fueling a broader social debate about women in sports.

The International Olympic Committee emphasized that Khelif, unequivocally recognized as female all her life, should not be the target of a "witch hunt." But the IOC's perceived inaction on the global discussion has led to increased stigmatization of transgender, nonbinary, and other LGBTQ+ individuals, casting a shadow over the Olympics' inclusive agenda.
