England captain Jos Buttler has been ruled out of The Hundred after sustaining a calf injury. Following the exit of Matthew Mott as England's white-ball head coach, Buttler retained his position as the limited-overs skipper. England's recent T20 World Cup campaign ended in disappointment as they were knocked out in the semi-finals by India, prompting Buttler to take a brief hiatus from cricket.
According to ESPNcricinfo, Buttler was slated to feature for the Manchester Originals but injured his calf during preparations. Initially, there was optimism about a late return in the tournament, but on Saturday it was confirmed that he would miss the entirety of The Hundred.
On Instagram, Buttler expressed his disappointment: 'Gutted to be missing The Hundred this year. Best of luck to the Manchester Originals for the rest of the campaign. Working hard to be 100% fit asap [as soon as possible].' Buttler has faced recurring calf issues in recent years, including an injury that sidelined him from England's T20Is in Pakistan and risked his participation in the T20 World Cup.
The Manchester Originals, who were runners-up in the last edition of The Hundred, have struggled this season, failing to win any of their three matches. Phil Salt has taken over as captain but managed just 23 runs in three innings. The rest of the batting lineup has also faltered.
Manchester Originals' coach Simon Katich initially considered Lancashire's club captain Keaton Jennings as Buttler's replacement. However, uncertainty around Buttler's recovery delayed this decision. The franchise has yet to confirm Buttler's replacement ahead of their matchup against Northern Superchargers on Sunday. (ANI)
