South Africa has brought fresh faces Nqaba Peter, Andile Simelane, and Jason Smith into their One Day International squad for upcoming series against Afghanistan and Ireland in the UAE. This marks their debut call-up, with Simelane also joining the Twenty20 squad for games against Ireland, Cricket South Africa announced on Monday.
Starting on September 18, South Africa will face Afghanistan in three ODIs at Sharjah, followed by two T20s against Ireland in Abu Dhabi, and concluding with three ODIs against Ireland at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium. Peter and Smith, who have prior T20 experience, will add depth to the squad.
“We have decided to give opportunities to some of the fringe players as well as those who have impressed in recent weeks and months,” said Rob Walter, South Africa’s limited overs teams coach. “Our goal is to build a wider pool of players, as we prepare for major tournaments in the next 18 months, looking ahead to the 2027 50-over World Cup.”
Seamer Lungi Ngidi, who has recovered from a right calf injury, has been named in all three squads. After their runner-up finish at the T20 World Cup in June and a 3-0 T20 series defeat in the West Indies last month, South Africa is keen to reclaim their winning form.
