Fear of Heights Forces Philipp Raimund's Withdrawal from Planica's 'Monster Hill'

Philipp Raimund, a German ski jumper, has withdrawn from the ski flying event in Planica due to his fear of heights. Raimund cites the risk of the 240-metre hill as the reason. Ski flying involves higher speeds and longer flights, making it riskier than regular ski jumping.

Fear of Heights Forces Philipp Raimund's Withdrawal from Planica's 'Monster Hill'

Philipp Raimund, the 24-year-old German ski jumper, announced his withdrawal from this weekend's highly anticipated ski flying event in Planica, Slovenia, citing issues stemming from his fear of heights. Raimund detailed his concerns in a social media post, highlighting the significant risk posed by the 240-metre 'Monster Hill' in Slovenia.

Ski flying distinguishes itself from regular ski jumping with its larger hills, providing athletes with increased speeds and extended flight durations. These factors contribute to the potential for record-breaking distances but also elevate the inherent risks involved. '...usually isn't a problem while ski jumping, but from time to time, I have the issue (mainly while ski flying) that my body is reacting without me controlling it,' Raimund shared on Thursday.

Raimund, who currently ranks 22nd in the overall World Cup standings, emphasized his unwillingness to take unnecessary risks, stating, 'I'm not taking the risk of it happening when I don't know if I'm still the pilot, or if I can't react at all.' Despite expressing the possibility of returning on Sunday, Raimund is resolved not to attempt the jump unless he feels confident and content.
