He had been battling prostate cancer for 10 months and dealing with depression following the death of his wife, Sheetala, a year earlier.

A recipient of the Major Dhyan Chand Award in 2019, Frederick's legacy in Indian hockey is profound, having been the first athlete from Kerala to secure an Olympic medal, and inspiring future generations in non-traditional hockey regions.
