Samatta Returns: Tanzania's Revamped Squad for AFCON 2023
Captain Mbwana Samatta has been included in Tanzania's 28-man squad for the Africa Cup of Nations finals held in Morocco. New coach Miguel Gamondi has made strategic changes, including dropping midfielder Mudathir Yahya while adding uncapped players. Tanzania will tackle Nigeria, Uganda, and Tunisia in Group C.
Captain Mbwana Samatta is set to make a return to Tanzania's squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations finals this month in Morocco. The announcement came via the Tanzania Football Federation on social media, marking a comeback for Samatta, who last played for the national team a year ago. The 33-year-old striker, formerly of Aston Villa, is part of a 28-man squad that aims to make an impact in the tournament.
Samatta is one of eight players in the lineup currently playing abroad. Also included are English-born Haji Mnoga, representing League Two side Salford City, and Tarryn Allarakhia, who plays for Rochdale. Both played at the last finals in Ivory Coast, where Tanzania ended at the bottom of their group.
Under the new leadership of coach Miguel Gamondi, who was appointed last month, there have been notable inclusions and omissions. Experienced midfielder Mudathir Yahya has been left out, while uncapped player Kelvin Nashon is set to make his debut. Tanzania will begin their campaign against Nigeria on December 23, followed by matches against Uganda and Tunisia in Group C.
