Nathan Lyon made history by taking two crucial wickets in his first over, moving past Glenn McGrath for second place on Australia's all-time test wicket-takers list. By tea on Day 2 of the third Ashes test, England found themselves in a precarious position at 132-5.
Earlier, Jofra Archer reduced Australia's tail, dismissing Mitchell Starc for a valiant 54 and Nathan Lyon to complete a five-wicket haul. Australia was all out for 371 after starting the day at 326-8 as England aimed to negate the Australian bowling attack.
England will look to captain Ben Stokes for a revival after a series of quick wickets. Stokes, who survived being hit by a short-pitched ball, stood unbeaten at 19 by the session's end. England urgently needs victory in Adelaide to reignite hopes of reclaiming the Ashes.
