At the grand opening of the Asian Weightlifting Championship in Gandhinagar, Gujarat's standing in international sports was underscored by state minister Jayaram Gamit. He announced that the event attracted participation from 178 athletes representing 30 countries, symbolizing Gujarat's emergence as a key player in India's sports scene.

This marks the second time India has hosted the Asian Weightlifting Championship, with the previous occasion being New Delhi in 1982. Gamit stressed Gujarat's evolution into a sports hub, facilitated by hosting premier global events and enhancing its sports infrastructure.

Absent from the competition due to injury recovery is Olympic medallist Mirabai Chanu. Taking the spotlight in her absence is Komal Kohar, who competes in the women's 48kg category. International Weightlifting Federation President Mohammed Hasan Jalood commended the organizing prowess, reflecting confidence in India's hosting capabilities.

Competing in the championship is a 16-member Indian team split evenly between male and female athletes. The event, scheduled to conclude on May 17, features notable competitors poised to advance India's prominence in weightlifting on an international scale.
