In a surprising turn of events, Scotland has added teenage midfielder Tyler Fletcher to their World Cup squad. Despite playing under 20 minutes for Manchester United this season, Fletcher will fill in for Napoli's Billy Gilmour, who sustained a knee injury during a recent warm-up against Curacao.

Scotland's coach, Steve Clarke, invited Fletcher to train with the national squad last week, seemingly as a precursor to this unexpected call-up. Fletcher's national debut came Saturday when he was brought on as a halftime substitute, earning him a spot over others like Lennon Miller, who recently played a full season in Italy's Serie A with Udinese.

Clarke noted, ''I just felt Tyler came into the squad this week and showed up really well, did well in the game so that was the thinking.'' This decision was difficult for Clarke, having to inform other standby players of their exclusion. Fletcher's addition sees him join young talents like Findlay Curtis and Ben Gannon-Doak on the team.

Scotland's return to the World Cup marks their first appearance in 28 years. They are set to kick off against Haiti in Foxborough on June 13, with a challenging group draw including Brazil and Morocco.
