India's top-order batting lineup asserted dominance on Day 1 of the sole Test against Afghanistan at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium. After a standout IPL 2026 season with the Gujarat Titans, Sai Sudharsan carried his success into the Test arena, scoring 81 runs at the critical number three position.

Sudharsan, chosen over Devdutt Padikkal despite Padikkal's impressive domestic season, silenced critics by forming a 139-run partnership with veteran opener KL Rahul, who remains unbeaten on 81. Although Sudharsan fell short of a century, his innings fortified India's position.

Sudharsan was dismissed by Saleem Safi, caught by Afsar Zazai, bringing captain Shubman Gill to the crease. By the second session's end, Gill was on 20, ensuring India's commanding position at 209/2. Earlier, after opting to bat first, India's Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 24 runs before his dismissal. Notably, Manav Suthar and Afghanistan's Nangyeyalia Kharote made their Test debuts.
