Google has announced the general availability of third-party smart chips in Google Docs, marking a significant milestone in the expansion of its smart canvas. This feature enables users to effortlessly add, view, and interact with critical information from third-party applications directly within a document.

"With these new third-party smart chips, you will be able to tag and see critical information from partner applications using @-mentions, and easily insert interactive information and previews from third-party apps directly into a Doc," Google said late last year when it announced the expansion of smart canvas would include third-party smart chips.

Following the initial announcement, developers have been hard at work creating app integrations, Google said, adding that several of its partners such as Atlassian, Figma, Miro, and Whimsical have already leveraged third-party smart chips to empower users with the ability to embed content seamlessly from their respective applications into Google Docs.

"Third-party smart chips are the latest smart canvas innovation that bring people and data into a single workflow, keeping teams focused and collaborating in the documents where they’re already working," Google wrote in a blog post on Friday.

To access third-party smart chips, administrators or end users must first install the relevant add-ons from the Google Workspace Marketplace. Once installation is done, simply paste a link from the desired third-party source into the document and select the "tab" option. Thereafter, a smart chip will populate in the document, providing a preview of critical information from the app, seamlessly integrated into the flow of work.

Google noted that admins can only create and utilize third-party smart chips if developers have enabled the feature for their application. Additionally, specific add-ons for third-party applications need to be installed or allowlisted by administrators to ensure end-users have access to this feature.

Third-party smart chips in Google Docs are available to all Google Workspace customers, including businesses, organizations, and educational institutions, as well as users with personal Google Accounts.

With third-party smart chips now generally available, Google Docs users can transform their documents into dynamic, interactive workspaces that integrate critical information from a variety of sources.
