Meta to Inform Brazilians on AI Data Usage Following Watchdog's Demand
Meta Platforms will inform its Brazilian users about how their personal data will be used to train generative AI. This follows a demand from Brazil's data protection authority. Users can opt out via notifications on Facebook and Instagram. Meta suspended AI tools in July after the watchdog raised concerns.
Meta Platforms will notify Brazilian users about the company's use of personal data for training generative artificial intelligence (AI), following a directive from Brazil's data protection authority, the company announced on Tuesday.
Starting Tuesday, Meta's users in Brazil will receive email and in-app notifications on Facebook and Instagram, informing them of the data usage and allowing them the option to reject it. This decision comes after Brazil's National Data Protection Authority (ANPD) suspended Meta's new privacy policy in July, due to concerns about data usage in AI training. The suspension was lifted last Friday after Meta agreed to issue disclosures.
In July, Meta had also halted the use of generative AI tools in Brazil, including features on WhatsApp. Brazil is the second-largest market for WhatsApp. At that time, Meta stated the suspension was enacted to address the ANPD's concerns. When asked if these tools would be resumed following the lifting of the suspension, Meta reiterated that the suspension was in place during talks with the ANPD.
