India's Telecom Gains: Reliance Jio Leads Subscriber Surge

India's telephone subscriber base saw a modest rise to 1,189.92 million in December 2024, with Reliance Jio leading in both mobile and fixed-line additions. Urban subscriptions increased, while rural numbers dipped. Jio dominated the broadband market, holding a significant share among top service providers.

India's telecom sector witnessed a slight increase in subscribers, with the overall count reaching 1,189.92 million in December 2024, as per a recent Trai report. Key contributor Reliance Jio significantly boosted its numbers, leading both the mobile and fixed-line subscriber categories.

The urban segment saw growth, with subscriptions climbing to 663.37 million from 659.87 million in November, while rural subscriptions decreased slightly. The wireless segment, meanwhile, experienced growth at a monthly rate of 0.17%, as wireless teledensity improved marginally.

Reliance Jio also strengthened its position in the broadband market, controlling over half of the market share. Other significant players included Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea, although BSNL and MTNL showed declining subscriber numbers in both wireless and wireline sectors.
