The Russian government mandates the pre-installation of MAX, a state-controlled messaging app, on all mobile devices starting September 1. A state-backed messaging application from Russia, touted as a rival to WhatsApp, must be pre-installed on all mobile phones and tablets from next month, as announced by the Russian government on Thursday. Critics warn that this app, known as MAX, could be employed for surveillance.
This strategic move by the government, announced as a drive for more internet control, necessitates MAX being pre-installed on all electronic gadgets sold in Russia starting September 1. Additionally, RuStore, the domestic app marketplace, will be mandated for installation on all Apple devices.
From January 1 next year, LIME HD TV, a free online app providing access to Russian state TV channels, will be pre-installed on every smart TV sold in the country, further embedding state-controlled digital content into Russian homes.
