Benin opts for improving the productivity of small farmers, to give a boost to this sector, announced the Ministry of Agriculture, Breeding, and Fishery.

The "Small Farmer Productivity Improvement Program" set up for this purpose aims to promote soil fertility, access to and availability of improved seeds, and access to markets for small producers.

This program is to increase the productivity of winter and irrigated production systems, targeting smallholders and emphasizing the value chain approach.

This program, which is supported by the Islamic Development Bank, covers 30 villages in Benin.

It is expected that the program, will be accompanied by the National Agricultural Research Institute of Benin and the territorial agencies of agricultural development, because of their proven expertise or their specificity, to develop links between agricultural research and extension.

National Agricultural Research Institute will focus on research and development activities on maize, rice, cassava, and legumes. The territorial agencies of agricultural development, meanwhile, will be responsible for popularizing the technologies that will come from it.

Earlier reported that 25,260,000 CFA francs are the total amount mobilized by NGO Benin-Clean Cities to make about fifty bins in the city of Cotonou to serve as receptacles for waste produced by road users.
