22 Airports Set for Renaming: 10 State Governments Submit Proposals

The civil aviation ministry has received proposals from 10 state governments to rename 22 airports. Proposals include renaming Tirupati Airport to 'Sri Venkateswara Airport' and Darbhanga Airport to 'Vidyapati Airport'. These proposals are under consideration and require Union Cabinet approval.

The civil aviation ministry on Thursday announced that it has received requests from 10 state governments proposing the renaming of 22 airports. In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol stated that airports are typically named after the city they are located in.

However, specific names proposed by state governments, supported by a resolution in the state legislative assembly, are reviewed in consultation with other ministries and then sent to the Union Cabinet for final approval, Mohol added. Currently, proposals from Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Haryana, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Punjab, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh are under consideration.

Among the notable proposals, Andhra Pradesh seeks to rename Tirupati Airport to 'Sri Venkateswara Airport' and Bihar has requested the renaming of Darbhanga Airport to 'Vidyapati Airport'. Maharashtra has proposed several name changes, including renaming Shirdi Airport to 'Shree Sai Baba International Airport'.
