Toyota's Cheating Scandal Deepens with New Certification Test Irregularities

Toyota reported additional cases of cheating on certification tests for new models required by the Japanese government, expanding on earlier admissions of testing irregularities.

In the latest disclosure, Toyota Motor Corp. acknowledged it failed to perform proper certification for seven models, including the Camry sedan and RAV 4 SUV. The falsified tests involved pedestrian protection, side collisions, and steering impacts.

No safety issues were linked to the misconduct, according to Toyota, and vehicle owners do not need to take any action. Overseas production remains unaffected. Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda had previously apologized for the testing irregularities impacting six models, including the Crown and Lexus RX. Production for some models in Japan was halted.
