West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday authorized the export of up to 2 lakh tonnes of potatoes to other states within a week, according to a minister's announcement.
The decision was made during a review meeting at the state secretariat, 'Nabanna'. Various stakeholders, including representatives from the Progressive Potato Traders' Association and Cold Storage Association, were in attendance.
This move follows a June restriction on potato exports due to surging prices, which had prompted strikes from traders. Agri-Marketing Minister Becharam Manna revealed that North Bengal will contribute one lakh metric tonnes and South Bengal another lakh, provided there is demand from neighbouring states.
Post-meeting, Progressive Potato Traders' Association Secretary Lalu Mukherjee confirmed that exports would begin on Wednesday, under the condition that potato prices remain stable. The chief minister will review price impacts after one week.
While the government aims to protect farmers from financial losses, Manna warned that the situation is being closely monitored as recent high prices have not benefited farmers substantially.
